Brits winner Florence and the Machine is set to play one of London’s most popular outside gigs this summer.

Singer Florence Welch, 23, who grew up in Camberwell, is one of a string of the city’s home-grown musicians taking to the stage at Somerset House.

Other London acts include the Mystery Jets and Noah and the Whale, both from Twickenham, Camden’s N-Dubz and The XX from Wandsworth.

Corinne Bailey Rae, The Temper Trap and Air are also in the programme that crams 11 concerts into 11 days from 8 July. It concludes with Soul II Soul in a rare live performance on the 21st anniversary of their album, Club Classics Vol 1.

Rufus Wainwright will follow up appearances at Sadler’s Wells next month by taking to the stage at this year’s Kenwood House picnic concerts. He will play songs from his new album, All Days Are Nights, as well as numbers from his cult hit Judy Garland tribute, Rufus Does Judy. He joins jazz stars Diana Krall and Jamie Cullum as well as Will Young in the line-up for the series at the English Heritage house in north London.

The traditional classical concert in the programme will see Anglo-Japanese violinist Diana Yukawa — who has lived in Britain since she was two months old — and the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra perform Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. The eight-week season concludes on 21 August with Faryl Smith, the Britain’s Got Talent teenager, performing with Wynne Evans, the tenor now best known for the Go Compare adverts, in a Last Night of the Kenwood Proms.

NOTHING says ”left field” like a penis. In a perpetually
televised world of frequent coarse language, occasional drug use
and strong sexual references, the male appendage is still the most
potent shorthand for wilful rebellion available to the modern
artist.
Even Anand Wilder is shocked to learn his band’s new, partially
nude video, Ambling Alp, has been aired on a show called
Rage in Australia. And he’s from New York.
”You saw a penis? They put that on TV over there? That’s so
great! We had all the business people around us saying, ‘Oh, great.
So I guess you don’t want this video played on TV’. We said, ‘Wait
a second, dude, does anybody play videos on TV any more?’ And
apparently, the answer is yes: in Australia. And Australians allow
penises on television. That’s wonderful.”
Like any band that’s properly plugged into the grid of modern
music consumption, Yeasayer make videos not for TV playlists but
for the lawless blogosphere. With similar logic, they made their
new album Odd Blood not for CD retail but for an online
audience that demands instant gratification.
”We’re living in an era where someone will send you a YouTube
link and if you’re not interested in 10 seconds you’ll shut off,”
says Wilder, who formed Yeasayer about five years ago with Chris
Keating, a fellow set designer for film and TV.
”People don’t have the patience for an album, so for a lot of
our songs we’re thinking, ‘OK, we have one shot with this. One song
that one person maybe finds and plays on some website. Is it gonna
be catchy enough? Is it gonna hook them in?”’
The answer, for the indie web-trawler with senses tuned in every
direction at once, is most likely to be yes. Yeasayer make music of
epic synthetic complexity that feels like a filter for the paranoid
techno-chaos of our times. The big tunes – imagine a digital
